Back in 1946 Len Willis would collect the freshly caught fish from Birmingham wholesale market and return home via steam train and horse & cart to his wife Annie Willis who would sell the catch from a cart on Bilston High St in the Black Country.
Fast forward 70 years and Annie’s great granddaughter, Rachel Steele, is following in her footsteps. Gone are the steam trains and horses but Rachel still buys the fish from local ports and aims to get the fish from sea to customer in less than 12 hours.
Rachel has been working in the family business alongside her parents from being 12 years old & in 2010 they started selling their fish from a cabin at Gwillam’s Farm Shop in Claines. Six years on and Rachel has now started her own business, The Fish Emporium, at the same location, but this time in a purpose built shop next to the farm shop.
The Fish emporium boasts over 30 varieties of fish in store, including a wide selection of smoked fish, white fish, crabs, prawns, lobsters, flat fish as well as fish flown in from further afield such as Tuna, Swordfish & Shark.
If you are looking for something a little extra special, then live shellfish are available but 48 hours’ notice is required for these. Alongside the vast array of fresh fish, Rachel also supplies a great selection of extras to accompany them, from rubs & sauces to naturally smoked products designed to enhance the fish’s natural flavour.
If you’re feeling adventurous and wish to try something different to your usual fish then Rachel and the team are always on hand to advise you what to try and also how to cook it!
The shop is easy to find in Claines, just off the A449 next to Gwillliam’s farm shop. There is plenty of free parking and a warm welcome awaits you!
